Before I filed away the cardboard mechanical iris in a box, I decided to do something today that I have been wanting to do for a long time; which is to stencil an image on the blades of an iris. This, I figured, has no real practical use – perhaps a new Iris Calculator business card – but none-the-less it would be an interesting effect to see. And as it’s Canada day today, what better image to use than the Canadian flag!
How it was made
Of course you need an iris diaphragm to start, which you can read about here. Once you have that, it’s very simple to make the stencil: Just print and cut out the parts of the image you want. Close the iris and tape your stencil in place. Then colour the blades with a marker.
Happy Canada day everyone!
